University of Coimbra (UC) is a research and education organization located in central Portugal, which was established in 1290. The Faculty of Science and Technology of UC (FCTUC) has eleven Departments, comprising all fields of exact sciences, natural sciences and architecture, equipped with appropriated laboratories and libraries. More than 500 research and industrial projects are active and a strong liaison exists with Institutes operating in the fields of applied science and technology transfer, as well as science based enterprise incubation. Academic staff is supported by ca. 160 administrative and lab technicians. This provides the ideal setting for development of advanced science, namely facilitating the constitution of inter- and multidisciplinary teams. 

The Research Group directly involved in the ETN is focused on steel and mixed construction technology (SMCT) and specialized in connections; sustainability, life-time engineering, monitoring and maintenance; structural behaviour of members and structures. The research group is one of the three research groupsw of the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (www.isise.net)
